Dykes on Bikes is a tribute to our Lesbian Sisters who are always on the front lines in the struggle for equality. Always front and center, leading the way for the pride parade our warrior sisters were also our caretakers during the A.I.D.S. pandemic which prompted the change from GLBT to LGBT... to recognize their love and support.

The popular myth that the Stonewall riot was started when a drag queen (Marsha P Johnson) threw a brick at the police is just that... a pretty myth. Marsha P Johnson maintained right up to his death that he and Sylvia Rivera were not even present when the riot started (read his biography if you don't believe me). There are many conflicting and confusing reports about the events of that night, but the majority of actual eye witness stated that the riot started when a Lesbian of Colour (I can barely imagine how a gay woman of colour would've been treated by police at that time) resisted arrest and fought back, yelling to the crowd, "Are you just going to stand there and let this happen?" The street kids from the park then joined and all hell broke loose. Marsha and Sylvia were huge front line champions for rights, but they didn't start the riot. The reason we don't hear about the lesbian who started the stonewall riot is because, for her own reasons, she never came forward and chose to stay anonymous and people have a need to put a face on a movement.

The original acrylic painting remains in my private collection and is not for sale. In fact it will most likely be given to my 30+ year lesbian sister Margaret at some point. Margaret rocked the leather jacket I used in the painting for years BTW.

Oh and it breaks my heart to have to say this, but for all the baby dykes out there, the song in the video is by Melissa Etheridge, search her music.
